Over the past three years, my PCTO experience has played a fundamental role in shaping both my technical skills and my personal development. When I first enrolled at IIS Nelson Mandela, in the Maintenance and Technical Assistance program, I knew very little about engines and mechanical systems. Still, I felt curious about this constantly evolving world. Today, I can confidently say that I made the right choice.

First Year: Entering the World of Mechanics

My first internship took place at Leurini’s Nissan Workshop, where I immediately felt welcomed. Even though it was my first experience in a workshop, I found a friendly and professional environment, full of people willing to guide me and teach me the basics of the job.

During this period, I learned how to:

  • Change engine oil
  • Replace tires
  • Work on body parts such as bumpers, headlights, and brake lights
  • Perform cosmetic modifications
  • Check and refill essential fluids
  • Carry out general maintenance
  • Properly dispose of metals and waste

This first experience helped me understand that mechanics was not just interesting — it was something I truly enjoyed.

Fourth Year: More Responsibilities and Human Interaction

In my fourth year, I continued my path at Novelli Autocarrozzeria Renault in Felina, working both as a mechanic and as a bodywork apprentice. My tasks were similar to the previous year, but with more autonomy and responsibility.

One of the most meaningful aspects of this internship was the daily contact with people. I interacted with many customers, including the local postman, who always made my mornings better with his humor and positivity. This helped me understand how important communication and customer relations are in this profession.

Fifth Year: Autonomy and Professional Growth

For my final PCTO year, I returned to Novelli Car Service, from June 9th to June 22nd. Being in an environment I already knew allowed me to work with confidence and independence. I was able to perform many tasks on my own, something that made me realize how much I had grown since my first internship.

The team was supportive and friendly, and this helped me improve even further. This last experience was the moment I truly felt “ready” — not just a student anymore, but a young professional.

Soft Skills I Developed

Along with technical skills, my PCTO experiences allowed me to develop several essential soft skills that will be valuable in any future job:

  • Teamwork and effective communication
  • Problem-solving, especially when facing mechanical or technical issues
  • Responsibility, punctuality, and reliability
  • Attention to detail, particularly in repairs and bodywork
  • Time management during multiple tasks
  • Adaptability to new tools, technologies, and situations

These skills complement my technical knowledge and prepare me for a future in the automotive field

Conclusion

My PCTO journey was not just a school requirement — it was a meaningful experience that helped me grow, learn, and understand what I want to do in life.
Looking back, I see how far I’ve come since my first day in a workshop. Looking forward, I feel motivated and confident to continue pursuing my passion for mechanics.
